What Is CBD Balm Used For?
Read Time: 5 minutes

From CBD oil capsules to gummies and topicals, CBD has continued to grow in popularity. However, CBD soothing creams and balms, in particular, have gained heightened attention for their beneficial anti-inflammatory properties. CBD balms offer many potential benefits against stubborn areas of pain and inflammation. Read on to learn more about CBD topical balms, how they’re used, and how they stack up against other CBD topical products.

What are CBD balms?

By definition, a “balm” is an ointment or preparation used to heal or soothe the skin. Also known as CBD salves, CBD balms are rich, versatile ointments infused with Cannabidiol or “CBD.” They contain skin-nourishing ingredients like Vitamin E, beeswax, and jojoba or coconut oil alongside full-spectrum CBD oil from hemp extracts to help relieve sore muscles, joint pain, and inflammation.

What is CBD balm used for?

CBD in the form of a balm is a versatile topical product with many purposes. Most people use CBD balms to help manage the inflammation that causes pain, cramps, and arthritis. However, the anti-inflammatory effects may also help relieve chronic pain and the symptoms of arthritis in the muscles and joints beneath the skin. Balms have become one of the most popular topical CBD products thanks to their many potential benefits against inflammation and pain when applied to the skin.¹

CBD muscle balms contain other active ingredients, such as menthol, capsaicin, or camphor, alongside essential oils and other ingredients that may make the effects of CBD against pain and inflammation feel more potent than the CBD alone. These different natural ingredients may also play a role in protecting the skin and reducing the appearance of certain inflammatory skin conditions, such as dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis.²

Keep in mind, though, that according to the Arthritis Foundation, further study is still needed to quantify the benefits of CBD against pain, inflammation, and arthritis.³ Studies have shown that CBD may be a potent anti-inflammatory that might provide relief to the muscles and joints when administered topically, and there is a fair amount of anecdotal evidence to support its effects. Just remember that CBD affects everyone differently, and your results may vary.

How To Use CBD Balms For Pain Relief

Because of their versatility, CBD balms can be applied to the skin in any area of inflammation or discomfort. Although studies for CBD and inflammation are still being conducted, CBD balms and topicals have shown to support pain management and help reduce discomfort associated with inflammation. CBD balms make excellent lip balm to soothe inflamed, chapped lips but may also provide relief against pain, cramping, and inflammation in joints or muscles all over the body. Topical CBD extracts, including balms, are most effective against pain or tension specific to one problem area because they can be directly applied to the area, which is why many look to CBD for sore muscles.

To use a CBD balm, we recommend cleaning the affected area with mild soap and water as cleaning the area may help you absorb CBD through your skin more effectively. From there, apply a liberal amount of CBD balm to the affected area and rub it in like lotion. You will begin to feel the onset of effects in 1 to 2 hours, and you may experience relief for up to 48 hours.

CBD Balms VS. Other CBD Topicals

There are many different topical CBD skin creams out there, and they all work in similar ways. Topicals help deliver concentrated relief to localized areas of pain and inflammation with CBD. Since CBD is absorbed easily by the skin, topicals tend to provide relief from pain longer than ingestible forms of CBD, though they take just a bit longer for the effects to onset.

But with that said, topicals themselves are slightly different from one another. Each one features different consistencies that play a role in using the product. For example, CBD Massage Oil and lotions are thinner and are meant to be applied to the whole body to promote relaxation and stress relief, while soothing minor aches and discomfort. CBD pain creams, balms, muscle gels, and salves, on the other hand, are thicker and meant for more powerful, concentrated relief in problem areas. Though different in consistency, the benefits of CBD lotion and massage oil can be used in conjunction with balms and salves to achieve the desired effect.

CBD balms are unique mainly for their versatility. Because of their rich, easy-to-apply texture, they make great joint cream, localized pain cream, and lip balm. However, since they’re on the thicker side, they’re best used for spot-treating problem areas, such as chapped lips, sore joints, menstrual cramps, or chronic pain from a prior injury. If you’re looking for full-body coverage, you’ll find decent relief but more coverage with CBD Lotion, CBD body oil, or CBD cream.
