CBD has shown to be effective for treating seizures in people with certain forms of epilepsy. A new study from Japan now suggests the same benefits that come from CBD could extend to dogs through animal-specific products like a CBD Pet Tincture.
The findings, published in Pet Behavior Science, come from from the Yamazaki University of Health. Three dogs who suffer from frequent epileptic seizures were included in the study. Researchers gave the animals small serving sizes of a CBD Pet Tincture twice each day for eight weeks. They also assessed the dogs every two weeks during the study.
Owners for two of the dogs, a labrador retriever and chihuahua, reported significant seizure reductions while using the CBD Pet Tincture. The labrador retriever had two seizures during the study and the chihuahua only had one. The chihuahua also showed “less aggression” after consuming the CBD Pet Tincture, while the labrador retriever reportedly both slept more and barked less.
The owner for the third dog, a papillon, reported no reduction in seizures. The papillon had eight seizures during treatment, but the owner noted he “settled down and slept longer during the day.”
Given the small sample size, the report makes clear that more research is needed. The scientists also wrote that “further research is needed for better understanding the neurobiological mechanisms of CBD.” They wrote that CBD is effective for reducing epileptic seizures in humans by lessening neurobiological symptoms that can trigger them. However, it’s still unclear if this is the case with dogs.
In June 2018, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a CBD-infused oral drug called Epidiolex. This medication is designed to treat seizures for two rare forms of pediatric epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome, in children over age two. Epidiolex is the first FDA-approved drug to contain CBD.
However, a study out of Israel suggested that Epidiolex may become less effective over time in some patients. The research findings, presented last December, found one-third of patients developed a tolerance after seven months. These patients needed to increase their dose of Epidiolex by 30% or they’d experience a 30% increase in seizures.
