CBD and your pets

As more and more research has been conducted on hemp post-legalization, scientists have uncovered a treasure trove of information surrounding CBD for both pets and people. Historically, CBD has been used to help pets with separation anxiety and chronic pain, though the more research is conducted, the more we're learning about the unique effects it has on pets. With that in mind, there are many reasons to want to give your pet CBD. Specially formulated pet treats and tinctures can help your pets lead a life of wellness, just like us.

Your pet's endocannabinoid system

CBD was discovered in 1964, which led to the 1988 discovery of the endocannabinoid system (ECS). It was later found that all animals on earth have an endocannabinoid system that may work in the same way ours does— by maintaining the body's balance and acting as a communication system between the mind and the body. Much like people, your pet's ECS helps regulate things like appetite, muscle and fat tissues, hormones, mood and stress levels, immune system function, pain and inflammation centers, and metabolic functions. Your pet's ECS processes cannabinoids like CBD and triggers their bodies to produce more natural endocannabinoids to help the body stay balanced. Adding CBD treats, chews, and other forms to your pet's daily routine can benefit them in all the ways it benefits us.

Benefits of CBD pet products

Since CBD is all about promoting balance within the body, it can help your furry friends manage various symptoms with little to no side effects. Over the years, many veterinarians have suggested CBD to pet owners, especially those with older pets, to improve their quality of life and avoid certain prescription medications that can help with pain but cause problems in other body areas. Many pet owners give their pets CBD to help them find pain relief, reduce anxiety, lower stress, improve moods, and increase mobility. CBD may also help soothe aching joints and other chronic pain and inflammation areas, boost wellness, prevent certain cancers from spreading, and help them relax.

FAQ

All animals and people have an endocannabinoid system (ECS) full of receptors, endocannabinoids, and enzymes. Just like our endocannabinoid system helps keep our bodies balanced by modulating mood, appetite, and immunity, your pet's ECS works the same way. CBD interacts with your pet's ECS to help regulate the body and encourage them to produce more endocannabinoids which can help with pain, relaxation, mood, stress levels, and appetite.

No, CBD has the same balancing effect in all animals. Cats and dogs both benefit from CBD in the same way that we do.

Yes. As with any dietary supplement, you should consult your veterinarian before trying CBD to rule out possible complications or allergies. As serving size can vary from pet to pet, they'll also help you find the best dosage for your pet's unique needs. Be sure to monitor your pet carefully when introducing CBD into their routine, too.

While it's unlikely that human CBD will harm your pet, it's best to use CBD specially formulated for pets. CBD pet products are formulated to help stimulate your pet's endocannabinoid system into producing more natural endocannabinoids. They are also rich in other vitamins and necessary ingredients that help the CBD product last longer in your pet's system, which naturally runs faster than ours.

Pets have different nutritional needs than we do. CBD for pets contains essential vitamins, fatty acids, and antioxidants, as well as plant extracts and CBD to help boost your pet's overall health. These ingredients also allow the CBD to take more time to be metabolized in the system, allowing for longer-lasting effects.

Many pets love CBD-infused treats. Not only do CBD treats taste great, but they may also help increase mobility and immunity and contain healthy and nutritional ingredients. They help mask the flavor and manage minor symptoms in one easy-to-deliver bite. However, CBD oil tinctures, formulated specifically for pets, are also a viable option since they're easy to dose and can be added directly to pet food, with all of the other benefits mentioned above.

You can give 1-5mg of CBD per ten pounds of body weight. For smaller animals under 10 lbs, you can use 0.2mg per pound of body weight. Since CBD generally doesn't come with adverse side effects, you can offer more or less based on how severe your pet's symptoms are. For example, you can give a 10-pound cat 1mg of CBD for general wellness and 5mg for pain. If you have a 50lb dog, you can administer 5mg for wellness and 25mg for chronic pain or severe anxiety. Remember that CBD works best when taken daily, like a supplement. It won't help with acute pain or anxiety in one dose, so consistency is key.

When administering CBD to your pet, it’s best to start with a small serving size to see how it will affect them and work your way up until the desired effects are achieved. Whichever amount you choose to start with, administer it consistently twice a day for several days. See how your pet responds and then increase accordingly. A good place to start is 0.25mg per kilogram of body weight. In pounds, this would be about 1mg per 10 lbs of body weight. For example, a 9mg introductory serving is a good place to start for a 90- pound dog. If you’re using a Lazarus Naturals pet tincture that contains 20mg CBD per dropper, a half-dropper would be a great dose to begin with.

You can use the guide on the label to start, but since every pet will react to CBD differently, you may need to increase or decrease the serving. If you’re looking for general wellness, start with 1mg per 10 lbs of body weight (or 0.25mg per kilogram of body weight). 3mg per 10 pounds would be a moderate dose for pain, and 5mg per 10 lbs would be a high dose for managing severe anxiety or pain.
