Cannabis Terpenes

Terpenes are naturally occurring chemical compounds that give many plants, including those in the Cannabis genus, a distinct aroma. Scientists have identified more than 120 different terpenes in Cannabis species, but the amounts of each can vary widely between different strains, producing vastly different aromas. Terpenes have been investigated for various therapeutic properties including antidepressants and analgesics.

Hemp vs. Marijuana: What’s the Difference?

What’s the difference between Hemp and Marijuana? It depends on who you ask. Legally, the distinction centers on the amount of THC a plant contains. If the THC content is below 0.3%, it’s Hemp. Plants with higher than 0.3% THC are Marijuana. Agriculturally and botanically speaking, Hemp and Marijuana are two common names for the same species, Cannabis sativa.

At Lazarus Naturals, every CBD product we sell is made from Hemp – Cannabis sativa with less than 0.3% THC – that we’ve grown, harvested and processed ourselves, as a vertically integrated company. You’ll notice that we italicize Cannabis in almost all instances. That’s an indication that we’re talking about the genus name for Hemp, not the colloquial term for the plant that exceeds 0.3% THC.

β-Caryophyllene

Modern Science & Research

β-Caryophyllene

A 2012 preclinical study in mice showed that β-caryophyllene reduced anxiety-like behavior and time to get to sleep. It also increased the duration of sleep. Similarly, a 2014 preclinical study showed β-caryophyllene exerted antidepressant and anxiolytic effects in mice. The authors concluded that these preclinical results indicated that β-caryophyllene could be effective in treating anxiety and depression, and suggested that further research should be done.

A 2020 literature review states that β-caryophyllene has both anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, based on multiple preclinical studies.

A small pilot study in humans from 2023 showed that an oral formulation of CBD oil and terpenes (including β-caryophyllene, ⍺-pinene and limonene) increased the amount of time spent in slow-wave and rapid-eye movement stages of sleep.
